Established in 2023, CANFARM PROTEIN is embarking on a pioneering journey in Canada, dedicated to establishing an innovative insect farm. CANFARM PROTEIN’s primary goal is to produce insect-based proteins that serve both animal feed and human consumption, addressing the global demand for sustainable, nutrition-rich protein sources, all while leaving a minimal carbon footprint. In recent years, the popularity of edible insects, such as crickets and mealworms, has surged in Canada. These tiny wonders have not only become standalone products but have also found their way into culinary creations, including protein powders. The versatility of insects goes beyond just food; they can be transformed into a wide array of non-food products, including cosmetics.
CANFARM PROTEIN also strives to meet the global scale of demand for animal feed and crop fertilizer and fill a gap in the agricultural chain by using leftover organic matter and animal manure produced in farms and turning them into rich fertilizers for the soil through vermicomposting. Further, CANFARM PROTEIN will help start the waste management process from the source, i.e., residential, commercial, and institutional entities, by offering them vermicomposting kits. All these will be done by making the process of converting mealworms and their by-products into high-performance nutrients for animals and plants accessible to all market segments.
With a strong team of academics, operations, and management people, CANFARM PROTEIN is here to address the growing interest of Canadians in sustainable lifestyles as well as the future global land and resource shortage that awaits a growing population. This will be done by combining organic cycles of nature with the scalable efficiency of technology, to produce an alternative to wasteful and unsustainable agricultural systems. CANFARM PROTEIN intends to start its operations by rearing mealworm, black soldier flies and crickets on its insect farm as early indications suggest a reasonable path to profitability this way. As the facilities grow, other forms of income, including vermiculture operations and selling the castings both in bulk and individually packed bundles, will also be pursued.
